“Gotta Catch ‘Em All” Recap [SPOILERS]

And the correct answer to the Gotta Catch ‘Em All puzzle was…

POKE BAR! Mix and match all sorts of fish and topping options (vegetarian-friendly too!) at this quick-serve poke establishment inside The Market grocery store on Market St. They also have a number of other locations, including Mountain View and San Jose.

Following the rules for separating regions, you can click on the borders between cells to draw these regions:

Then, toggling the “HIDE POKEDEX INFO” button reveals the Pokemon, Pokeballs, and potions that are grouped together:

Clicking each item gives some additional information about it. The clues for the potions each hint at a common compound:

  • “Potion S4 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region. Rub potion S4 into your wound to add insult to injury. For bad advice, take it with a grain of this potion.”
    SALT
  • Potion B6 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for cleansing Pokemon in the surrounding region. Only side effect? It turns its Pokemon white!
    BLEACH
  • Potion Q6 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region. This potion can be used time and time again.
    QUARTZ
  • Potion A7 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region, especially to help plant Pokemon grow tall. To find some, head toward the Siwa Oasis, but stop a little short.
    AMMONIA
  • Potion W5 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region. You’ll find this common potion all around the world, but it’s especially enjoyable at spots like Kalahari, Schlitterbahn, and Siam Park.
    WATER
  • Potion D7 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region. This potion is a Nidorina’s best friend! For extra fun, use with potions C4, S5, and H5.
    DIAMOND
  • Potion V7 is made by Pokemon in the surrounding region, and is effective for treating Pokemon in the surrounding region. Potion V7 was once used by four thieves to avoid the plague.
    VINEGAR

In each region, there is one potion/compound. Each Pokemon in that region corresponds to an element from the periodic table that comprises that compound. Specifically, the atomic number of an element is the corresponding Pokemon’s canonical number. So oxygen, which has atomic number 8, is Pokemon #8: Wartotle. From this information, one can solve for the missing Pokemon from each region, which is hiding inside the Pokeball:

  • Pidgeotto
  • Metapod
  • Kakuna
  • Squirtle
  • Bulbasaur
  • Charizard
  • Wartortle

Finally, the clue for each Pokeball, e.g. “6 of 7,” points toward a letter from each Pokemon’s name. So for Metapod, the 6th out of 7 letters would be “O.”

Putting these all together (in the order of Pokeballs given at the bottom of the puzzle), we get the answer: POKEBAR!

This week’s Fastest Solver was Team White Maria. Congratulations! They were followed closely by the second place team Davidstein and Friends, and third place team Jeff.

The Fastest Photo came from Team Carly, who says,

“After wandering around some loading docs…
We found Poke Bar and met Jeff from the neighboring restaurant.
In addition to me, Saurav, Jake, Chris, and Daniel joined my team for this puzzle.”

Just a reminder to all teams–if your team would like to change their official name at any time, let us know and we’re happy to make the change!

The all-time and monthly leaderboards have been updated to reflect the latest standings, and winning teams have been contacted about T-shirts. Knights of the Square Table was the lucky random winning team this week! Hooray!

Coming up in July, we’ll have a special feature from July 12th to 26th, so you’ll have two weeks to submit your answers for that puzzle–get excited!

And….this week’s puzzle “Road Trip (Part One)” is now live! Enjoy!
